By getting involved, you'll help raise awareness about the vital need to protect the Clarence Catchment from harmful mining activities while showcasing the cultural and environmental importance of this area.

It's a fun, community-driven opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals, contribute to a meaningful cause, and celebrate the Jacaranda Festival, all while helping to ensure the wellbeing of our local environment for future generations.

Here’s some ideas we’d love help with to get started. We only have 2 months as the float procession is the 2nd November.

Here are some creative ways the community could contribute to designing and building the CCA Jacaranda Festival float:

Local Artists: Design eye-catching features or lead decoration workshops.

Community Groups: Donate sustainable materials or supplies.

Aged Care Residents: Handcraft decorations like fabric native flowers or banners.

Local Businesses: Sponsor materials or volunteer manpower.

Crafting Enthusiasts: Lead workshops or help with float construction.

Local Musicians: Play tunes on our float.

Truck or long trailer owners: Please lend us your rig!

By bringing the community together, everyone can play a meaningful role in creating a float that reflects our shared commitment to protecting the Clarence Catchment.

WRITE TO A NSW MINISTER TODAY

Please write to the NSW Ministers listed, create your own personalised message, and send it to them through the contact pages we have linked below. Use the letter template below as a guide.

  • This is just a suggestion. Please personalise it , add what the area means to you and what is at stake. Or write your own version but please be sure to include the 4 points we are calling for.

    My name is … and I am a …

I write to voice my concern about the mineral mining explorations underway in the Clarence Catchment, NSW, and the potential threat this poses to the local ecology, waterways, drinking water, culture, and economy if mining were approved.

Recent catastrophic floods in the Northern Rivers prove that this is no place for mineral mining and tailings dams.

Mining in high rainfall flood zones, on steep terrain next to the Clarence, Mann, and Nymboida Rivers, and in our drinking water catchments, WILL leach or overflow heavy metal and toxins into our waterways and is a potential catastrophe waiting to happen.

Given the well-documented track record of tailings dams failure, and their contamination of waterways here in Australia and around the world, I appeal to you for support.

Our water-based community and economy relies heavily on our river systems, catchments, and ocean for our social, cultural, environmental, and financial wellbeing.

No promise of mining jobs can outweigh the potential decimation of the millions of dollars and employment that our existing local sectors and the industries that service them already provide. Tourism, fishing, prawning, farming, agri-food, to name a few.

Three First Nations have deep cultural ties to local Country and Riverdreaming is core to the rich culture of this area.

The Clarence catchment provides habitat for many endangered threatened and at risk species. The Eastern Freshwater Cod, Koala and Platypus to name a few.

We know that you hold the authority to make changes to State Policy to protect this rich ecological and cultural area and value the worth our economy contributes to NSW. It is with the above in mind that I appeal to you to:

FOR THESE MANY REASONS, I RESPECTFULLY URGE THE GOVERNMENT TO:

    1. Ban future mineral mining, exploratory and active in the Clarence Catchment

    2. Cease the renewal of and revoke existing exploration licences and mining leases in areas of the Clarence Catchment (i.e. the Clarence Valley and surrounding Local Government Areas) that feed our water source, in recognition of:

-the threatened species and ecological communities found in this region, such as the Eastern Freshwater Cod and Koala

-the region's food, fishing, farming and tourism industries that are reliant on clean water, and the existing thriving economy and employment these industries create

-First Nations, cultural and community ties to the Clarence River, its major tributaries and surrounding lands

-the heightened risk of contamination due to the region's high rainfall and frequent major flooding events.

    3. Join our calls to the Minister for Planning and Public Spaces to amend the NSW State Environmental Planning Policy (Resources and Energy) 2021 to add the following as prohibited development:

-Mineral mining and mineral exploration in all parts of the Clarence Valley Local Government Area and the Clarence Catchment's headwaters in the Coffs Harbour, Bellingen, Armidale Regional, Glen Innes Severn, Tenterfield, Kyogle and Richmond Valley Local Government Areas.

    4. Amend the NSW Mining Act 1992 to ban mineral exploration and mineral mining occurring in major urban drinking water catchments, culturally and environmentally sensitive areas, in areas prone to flood and landslips, and across the Clarence Catchment.

Thank you for your time; I await your response.

    Sincerely…
